MOBDRO: A ONE-STOP SHOP FOR STREAMING VIDEO
Between tedious setups and connectivity difficulties, it's rare that a streaming application is impressive upon launch. For Mobdro it's an apt preview, as the excitement doesn't stop there. Collecting hundreds of the world's free video streams into a single app, Mobdro is robust yet easy to use. Billed as both a 'freemium' and 'premium' app, some of Mobdro's features are only available as a yearly €2.99 ($3.17) in-app subscription. However, unlike many other Android apps on the market, Mobdro's 'freemium' version functions perfectly. You won't be forced to upgrade just for the app to stabilize and be useful.
Let's start with the basics first.
The bulk of Mobdro's features are available in the 'freemium' app version. This includes channel categories ranging from news and sports to podcasts; an ability to mark favorites; and a recently watched list. Though the ads at the tops of each page of channel listings can be obtrusive, it doesn't slow the scrolling of the app. Full-screen ads will also randomly appear before a selected channel loads.
Since the focus of the Mobdro app is free video streaming (emphasis on free), clicking on a channel will drop you into the middle of a stream. For example, there are 24HR Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter channels; entering one means you may not be starting a movie from the beginning. The emphasis on free streams becomes apparent during searching as well; searching for a specific video title returns spotty results. Searching for a channel name (e.g., MTV) will return better search results.
Another one of Mobdro's highlights is the 12 sorting languages, from Arabic to Turkish, available to choose from when browsing channels. If uninterested in multiple languages, you can pick a preferred language permanently from the settings menu. Mobdro's free settings also allow a user to enable accelerated hardware decoding or set parental control filters.
Although Mobdro 'freemium' is nice, the premium version of the app is where it truly shines. As is standard, the first to go upon upgrade are the many ads littered over the app. Upgraded users gain Chromecast support and a sleep timer, as well as live stream capture and cloud-sharing abilities. Mobdro premium users are also able to download select video streams and make them available for offline viewing.
At the time of this article, there are two future premium upgrades planned: favorites synchronization and live event notification. Encouragingly, Mobdro's developers have an open line of communication with their fan base; feature requests and bug fixes are taken seriously.
Summarily, Mobdro is a solid Android app in both its free and paid forms. Everyone can find a use for it, whether it be an occasional documentary or an all-out movie binge. A final fact to note about this app is that it is not available on the Google Play marketplace. You can download Mobdro latest APK file on this page. Like all applications from 'unknown sources', be sure to only download from the official source.
